Program Overview
The St. Louis Community College cybersecurity program design is based on the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce Framework (NCWF) available at https://www.nist.gov/itl/applied-cybersecurity/nice/resources/nice-cybersecurity-workforce-framework
Many of the courses are offered in 8-week formats and use the “flipped-classroom” where students attend and do hands-on work with the teacher and watch the prerecorded lectures outside of class at their convenience. To answer your questions:
The Cybersecurity program is managed at our Forest Park campus and the advanced cyber courses are offered there. However, many of the lower-level courses and programming courses can be found at the Meramec and Florissant Valley campuses too. Some classes are offered every semester but some of the advanced classes are offered once per year, depending on student needs. The interactive class schedule on our web site can show when and where the classes are offered.
Some of the lower-level classes do have an online option occasionally. The security-focused courses are mainly offered in a hybrid format, with the online portion consisting of student work that can be done outside of the classroom but hands-on in the classroom.

Are you a veteran? Thank you for your service to our country. Here’s a link to our Veteran Affairs page: https://stlcc.edu/admissions/apply-to-stlcc/veterans.aspx
Cybersecurity classes may be taken on a part-time basis, as a student’s schedule allows. We have courses available during the fall, spring and summer semester. Because some of our courses are 8-week hybrid classes you could, for example, take two classes per (16-week) semester – one during the first 8 weeks, then another during the 2 nd 8-weeks. You would only have to study for one a class at a time but wind up at the end of the semester having completed two classes.
Many of our students are working professionals and take our evening courses, choosing to come one or two nights per week or more if they wish to complete the program faster.

Program Overview
In IT, it’s not about degrees! What matters is having the right skills. Our hands-on, skills-based training is aimed at both the beginner and the seasoned IT pro. Many of our students already work in IT – an indication that we are training for the right skills. SCC’s IT program was created by and is taught by IT workers – not teachers that have never worked in IT. We offer three areas of concentration:
Our tuition rate is a fraction of what a university charges. You’ll get the best training in the right skills for a lot less money! Our training is a key part of preparing for Information Technology certifications:
- CompTIA A+
- CompTIA Security+
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
- Cisco Certified DevNet Associate
- Red Hat Certified System System Administrator (RHCSA)
- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
- Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
- Certified Hacking Forensics Investigator (CHFI)
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
- vSphere Foundations Exam
- VMware Certified Technical Associate (VCTA)
- VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
- AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate
Many IT workers today do not have a degree. What they have are the right skills. I can’t over emphasize the importance of getting the right skills to be successful in IT. That’s not to say that a degree is not worthwhile. If you do not have some sort of degree, then I recommend that you seek a degree as well. In addition, certifications like those listed above are valuable. Just know that it is about having the right skillset more than anything else. Don’t waste your time training somewhere, if they are not targeting the skills above in a hands-on, skills-based environment. I always tell prospective students to first research the job market by talking to people already working in IT, job shadowing if possible, and searching the job ads. Determine the skills needed. Then find somewhere that will train you in those skills. That’s what we do!
SCC’s enhanced Cyber Security program zeroes in on the right skills:
- IT-172: Digital Forensics – how to properly preserve and gather the evidence or figure out how deep an intrusion was
- IT-171: Ethical Hacking – the offensive part of the game, or how do hackers hack into a system or network
- IT-173: Topics in Cyber Security I – content is updated regularly to ensure we are covering the most important skills to work in cyber security
- IT-270: Network Security – the defensive part of the game, or configuring firewalls, Intrusion Protection Systems, and Cisco Adaptive Security Appliances (ASAs) to defend your network and assets
- IT-271: Penetration Testing – conducting penetration tests to evaluate a company’s security weaknesses
- IT-273: Topics in Cyber Security II – content is updated regularly to ensure we are covering the most important skills to work in cyber security
- IT-275: CISSP – preparation for the Computer Information Systems Security Professional certification exam – the cert that is most often sought in cyber security job ads

Program Overview
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s School of Business launched its new undergraduate cybersecurity specialization program in 2020.
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Cybersecurity
There is a global shortage of cybersecurity professionals, according to the 2019 National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Workforce Demand Report, including more than 25,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs in Illinois and Missouri alone.
Businesses recognize how critical cybersecurity has become for businesses of all sizes,” said Tim Jacks, PhD, associate professor and computer management and information systems (CMIS) undergraduate program director. “Various threats, such as denial of services attacks, ransomware, phishing, and cryptojacking are all on the rise. Our program deliberately emphasizes a combination of business and technology skills while offering industry standard certification opportunities.”
Curriculum for the new specialization has been developed by the Department of CMIS following rigorous guidelines published by the Joint Task Force on Cybersecurity Education, the IEEE Computer Society, and the Association for Information systems (AIS). To ensure real-world relevancy of coursework, the department is also leveraging strategic partnerships with local law enforcement, the FBI, Scott Air Force Base, and the Gateway Higher Education Cybersecurity Consortium (GHECC).
Students specializing in cybersecurity will take required coursework in information security while having the opportunity to select electives such as security and analysis, IT audit and control, ethical hacking and penetration testing, and cybercrime. Throughout the program, students will be provided with industry certification opportunities such as Security+, Certified Ethical Hacking, and Certified Information Systems Security Professional.
To provide students with immersive, hands-on cybersecurity experiences, the program offers a unique cyber classroom that emulates a Network Operations Command Center (NOCC).
The Ralph and Donna Korte Cyber-Analytics Classroom makes use of large, flat-paneled monitors to display lecture slides, software demonstrations, and real-time dashboards of cyber incidents occurring around the world. A rack of functioning telecommunications equipment provides students with the experience of seeing how firewalls, routers and servers interact and physically connect.
“Having a dedicated space sends a clear signal of how important this is for the school and our students,” said Jacks. “We intend to educate the next generation of students that will protect businesses and keep them operational and safe. These future cybersecurity professionals will enter the workforce having had immersive, interactive learning experiences.”
The Department of Labor forecasts 0% unemployment in the cybersecurity industry in the next 5-7 years. Students completing a bachelor’s in business administration with the cybersecurity specialization will be prepared for entry level positions such as security analysis, security operations, incident response, IT auditing, security provisioning, and threat detection.
The cybersecurity specialization prepares students for entry into professional careers in cybersecurity, information security and security management. The specialization is designed to provide students with a solid foundation of information systems management knowledge coupled with specialized skills in cybersecurity. In addition to learning how to protect valuable information assets for a firm, students will also obtain a broad range of business skills in accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing. Students in the cybersecurity specialization must maintain a 2.5 GPA in all CMIS courses.
The three-year Curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Cybersecurity includes courses ranging from Operations Management to Information Security and Business Telecommunications, along with more traditional undergraduate courses such as microeconomics and public speaking.
